The dictionary defines relaxation as; rest or refreshment as after work or effort; release of tension; relief from bodily or mental work, effort, application, etc; an activity or recreation that provides such relief; diversion; entertainment.

Life is lived at such a hectic pace today that people just get wound up tighter and tighter. It can feel like you are on a fairground ride that goes faster and faster with no way of getting off.

It is becoming more and more difficult to get away from it all and find time to relax. With most people never going anywhere without their mobile phone or laptop computer they find themselves constantly at the beck and call of friends, business colleagues or their boss.

No wonder so many people just cannot cope and fly into a temper. We even have special words for different types now, road rage, air rage etc.

Stress is the curse of living in modern times. Everyone suffers from stress. And the stress we suffer takes a heavy toll on our bodies, emotions and minds.

For many people relaxation comes easily. If they are feeling stressed then taking a long soak in the bath or listening to their favourite music or even a walk in the local park will work a treat and have them back to normal in no time.

For others it is not that simple. Relaxation no longer comes naturally to them. So how do we achieve relaxation?

There are many ways of learning to relax. No one way is right for everyone. Each person has to find the method that works for them.

Deep breathing is one of the easiest methods to relax. Breathing influences almost all aspects of our person, it affects our mind, our moods and our body. Simply focus on your breathing, taking deep breathes, after a short time you can feel its beneficial effects.

Exercise. If you feel irritated a simple half-hour of exercise will often settle things down.

Meditation. Meditation means 'a cessation of the thought process'. This is a method of simply focusing the mind on nothing instead of focusing on all that is making you stressed. It is a state of consciousness where the mind is free of scattered thoughts. It is not some mysterious religion or mystic trance. In fact, it is a simple method to help you strengthen your mind and learn to focus on the task at hand.

Sounds. Listening to music or nature sounds. You can buy CDs or download all kinds of relaxing music and nature sounds such as a babbling brook, woodland sounds etc

Yoga. The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India. This implies joining or integrating all aspects of the individual - the mind, body and spirit to achieve a happy and balanced life.
